Overview

National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER) is the first education institute running as a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) organization under the Ministry of Textiles & Jute, GoB. It is located in its own campus at Nayarhat, Savar, Dhaka adjacent to the Dhaka-Aricha highway and enjoys excellent communication facilities connecting among important cities of the country. The total campus area of NITER is 13.06 Acres with adequate built up space in its academic, administrative, hostels, Canteen and other buildings.

As per the decision of the Ministry of Textiles & Jute, NITER has been running under the management of ‘Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA)’ since September 2008. An operational agreement was signed between ‘Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA)’ and ‘Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC)’ under the Ministry of Textiles & Jute. After signing the agreement, BTMA actively took the responsibilities of NITER on May, 2009. That time it was known as ‘National Institute of Textile Training Research and Design (NITTRAD)’.

BTMA expanded the academic span of the institute and started B. Sc. in Textile Engineering course under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology of the University of Dhaka. From 2010-2011 session, B. Sc. in Textile Engineering course was started. Considering the nature and future prospect of this institute, the University of Dhaka requested the Ministry of Textiles & Jute to change the name of NITTRAD. Accordingly the Ministry renamed NITTRAD as ‘National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER)’ from January 2013.

Apart from Textile Engineering course, NITER is now offering four other important engineering courses namely B. Sc. in Industrial & Production Engineering (IPE) and Fashion Design & Apparel Engineering (FDAE), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) to meet the present demand skilled manpower as well as the automation of our Textile and allied sector. Furthermore NITER has started M.Sc. in Textile Engineering course under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology and MBA in Textile & Apparel Value Chain under the faculty of Business Studies of the University of Dhaka. Near about 2500 students are studying in these courses and the numbers are increasing every year.

NITER is being operated by a ‘Governing Body’ consists of the members from BTMA, Ministry of Textiles & Jute, BTMC, University of Dhaka and from the institute as well. Mohammad Ali Khokon, renowned industrialist and the President of BTMA is the Chairman of the Governing Body.

Background History of NITER:

‘National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER)’ was previously evolved from ‘Textile Industry Development Center (TIDC)’ which was established in January 1979 and once emerged as the only training centre capable of imparting practical oriented quality training for professionals engaged in the textile manufacturing industry. The main objective was to provide skilled professional manpower for the government-owned textile industries. Later on, from 1994 to 2007 this organization was known as ‘National Institute of Textile Training Research and Design (NITTRAD)’ and was operating need-based short courses related to textiles. In order to meet the upward demand of skilled textile engineers for the textiles and allied sector of Bangladesh, the objective was changed. In this continuance, the operational management of the institute was handed over to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) on September 2008. Since that time, it has been successfully running as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) organization and contributing to meet the acute demand of skilled professionals for our textile and allied sectors.

Facilities of NITER:

NITER has 13.06 acres of land with vibrant greenery and scenic beauty. NITER has adequate numbers of qualified faculty members, officers, and staff. There are Academic buildings and Administrative building with sufficient space. It has all kinds of modern laboratories, sufficient number of class-rooms with adequate space, web-based library, fully equipped computer labs with internet facilities, separate hostels for male & female students with amenities, canteen, playground & indoor games, wifi-zone campus etc. There are several clubs of student activities functioning in different fields. Many seminars, workshops, events take place under different clubs.

Furthermore, NITER has a unique wing namely ‘Center for Research and Industrial Relations (CRIR)’ for operating its collaborative research & innovative activities, student’s industrial trainings as well as job placements. Generally a NITER graduate has good demand in the textile job sector and gets employed rapidly.

There is a Proctorial-body to oversee the rules and regulations and the disciplinary activities of the students. Similarly, Hostels Superintendents are there to look after the resident students of NITER. There are also teacher’s quarters inside the NITER campus.

Message From Director

On behalf of our Faculty, Students and Staff, I welcome you all to National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER). Situated at Nayarhat, Savar, Dhaka the campus of NITER is a 13.06-acre scenic beauty of nature having a variety of flowers, trees, and vast green fields.

NITER is one of the supreme engineering institutes in the field of textile engineering of this country. Note that this is the first education institute running as a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) organization under Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC), Ministry of Textiles & Jute. The private partnership belongs to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) which has been operating NITER since 2009. Besides, it is a constituent institute of the University of Dhaka for dealing all its academic affairs.

There are three pillars which are the foundation of NITER education: knowledge, technical skill and research. This is because a student having good subject knowledge and technical skill can be treated as a good product, which means that they will be virtuous engineering graduate. Besides we focus on research particularly for senior students. Here the labs are suited for research that encourages our students and faculty to do high quality works.

In NITER there are five Bachelor and two Master’s program and in all cases the curriculums are designed to produce knowledgeable and technically sound graduates who can serve the textile industry of Bangladesh. More than 2000 students are currently enrolled in these programs. The teaching staffs are highly qualified, having MSc/Ph.D. from home and abroad, to deliver not only first-class education but also seek for academic excellence. Besides the supporting staffs working in different sections of the institute provide admirable services for creating a cordial teaching-learning environment.

This is twenty first century where people are talking about artificial intelligence (AI), 4.0 Industrial Revolution and necessity of Knowledge Driven Industry. Hence, a competent, confident, and applicable knowledge force is the utmost requirement for social growth. NITER stands here with all the required essentials for ensuring the transformation of students to world class professionals for the increasingly competitive global market. The teaching & learning process of our institute is continuously monitored, and in the process, feedbacks are always congregated from the stake holders such as students, guardians, industry people and academicians.

From the very beginning we relentlessly try to develop the soft skills of the students and allow them to feel more responsible towards society. Focus is given here to build their self-confidence and making them unafraid to take the new challenges. Environments are created to help them blossom, grow as individuals, develop moral values, and nurture their merit. Additionally, a true atmosphere is well established for developing the academic, social, and emotional skills of the students, enabling them to understand their true potential.

We firmly believe that, ‘Academic excellence can be attained and sustained only if the righteous environment exists and is maintained.’
